Meet The Artist
Nitashia Johnson is a multidisiplinary artist, educator, and visual storyteller based in Dallas, Texas. Her work explores the power of image-making as a tool for connection, reflection, and cultural preservation, with a focus on amplifying the depth, beauty, and complexity of Black life.
Working across photography, video, design, and installation, Nitashia creates projects that uncover hidden narratives and invite viewers to engage more deeply with the world around them. She is the founder of The Smart Project, a Dallas-based nonprofit that provides free creative arts programming for youth, creating pathways for the next generation of storytellers.
As a photojournalist, her work has been featured in publications including The Washington Post, The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, The Marshall Project, and Bloomberg News, among others. She has also collaborated with brands such as Sony, bringing a thoughtful and intentional approach to every project she takes on.
Her ongoing body of work challenges limiting narratives while building an archive rooted in truth, memory, and lived experience. Through both her artistic practice and community work, she remains committed to using storytelling as a means of empowerment, education, and lasting impact.
My Creative Approach
My approach comes from the power of observation and the power of feeling. Those near me, I take the time to learn and honor through photography and storytelling, and I aim to carry that same intention even toward those far beyond my reach. Photojournalism, visual storytelling, and education have led my life.
As a traditional visual artist, inspired by my work in graphic design, 2D design, and other creative areas, I’ve been able to intertwine different mediums to bring my work to life. My approach is deeply rooted in what I experience in life.
